What is Type 3 car insurance?
Type 3 is voluntary car insurance that usually has the lowest premium of every type. It mainly covers your liability to other people: when you hit something and you're at fault, the insurer pays to repair the other party's car, damage to third parties' property such as a fence or a wall, and third-party injury and death above what the พ.ร.บ. pays. Type 3 doesn't cover your own car at all, whether you hit another car, crash on your own, or the car is stolen or burns. Repairing your car is your own cost, unless the other party is at fault and their insurer pays. That limit is why Type 3 costs less than Type 3+ and every other type. Type 3 differs from Type 3+ in that Type 3+ also repairs your car after a crash with another vehicle whose driver can be identified. If you can cover your own repairs and only want third-party cover above the พ.ร.บ., Type 3 is the fit. As with every type, your car still needs its own พ.ร.บ. (compulsory motor insurance).
What Type 3 car insurance covers
Type 3 focuses on what you owe other people, which can be very large when you hit an expensive car or someone is hurt.
- Repairs to the other party's car, when you're at fault
- Liability for third parties' property, such as a fence, a wall or a lamp post
- Liability for third parties' lives and bodies, above what the พ.ร.บ. pays
- Medical expenses for driver and passengers, which some plans include
- Personal accident cover for driver and passengers, which some plans include
- Driver bail bond after an accident, which some plans include
Limits and conditions follow each insurer's policy. Extra cover such as medical expenses, personal accident and driver bail depends on the plan, so check your quote shows them.
What Type 3 doesn't cover
Type 3 has the lowest premium because it doesn't look after your car at all. Know these limits before you choose it.
- Repairs to your car after a crash with another vehicle, even when the other party is identified
- Repairs to your car after a crash with no other party, such as hitting a pole, a pothole or a wall
- Theft or loss of the car
- Fire
- Flood and natural disaster damage to your car
- Wear and tear, and breakdowns not caused by an accident
If you also want your car repaired after a crash with another vehicle, compare Type 3+. Other exclusions, such as driving over the legal alcohol limit or using the car differently from the policy, follow each insurer's policy.
How Type 3 differs from Type 3+ and Type 2
All three cover the other party and third parties the same way. Type 3 doesn't cover your car at all, so it has the lowest premium.
| Cover | Type 3+ | Type 2 | Type 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car-on-car, other party identified (your car repaired) | Covered | Not covered | Not covered |
| Single-vehicle accident | Not covered | Not covered | Not covered |
| Theft | Not covered | Covered | Not covered |
| Fire | Not covered | Covered | Not covered |
| Flood | Depends on the plan | Depends on the plan | Not covered |
| Third-party injury and property | Covered | Covered | Covered |

A starting point for comparison only. Actual cover and limits follow each insurer's policy. For Type 1 and Type 2+, see our guide to the types of car insurance.
Who Type 3 is for
- Older cars with so little value left that a type that repairs the car isn't worth it
- Anyone ready to pay for their own car's repairs after an accident
- Anyone who wants third-party cover above the พ.ร.บ. for a low premium
- Cars used very rarely, or a household's second car
- City drivers, who are more likely to hit an expensive car or someone else's property
Type 3 suits you when the loss you worry about most is what you'd owe other people, not your own repairs. Hit a new or expensive car while at fault and its repairs can cost several times what your own car is worth, and the พ.ร.บ. doesn't pay for the other party's property. Type 3 closes that gap. Ask yourself: if your car were damaged in an accident, could you pay for the repairs yourself? If yes, Type 3 is usually the cheapest choice. If you still want your car repaired after a crash with another vehicle, compare Type 3+, and if theft or fire worries you, compare Type 2 or Type 2+. The simplest way to decide is to compare quotes for several types on your car and see how much more you pay for how much more cover.
How to claim on Type 3, step by step
When you're at fault, Type 3 deals with the other party's damage for you. Your own repairs are your cost, or you claim them from the other party's insurer if they're at fault.
Make everyone safe first
Turn on your hazard lights and put out a warning sign behind the car. If anyone is hurt, call 1669 before anything else.
Get the other party's details and evidence
Get their name, phone number, plate number and insurer. Photograph every car with its number plate visible, the damage, and the scene from a distance. Keep your dashcam footage too if you have it.
Call your insurer
Call the claims hotline on your policy and give your policy number, plate number, location and what happened. Don't admit fault or pay the other party yourself before you speak to the claims officer.
Wait for the claims officer
Insurers usually send a claims officer to the scene. The officer checks what happened, decides who is at fault, and issues the documents the other party uses to get their car repaired.
Your insurer handles the other party's damage
If you're at fault, your insurer pays for the other party's car and property, and for injury and death, up to the limits in your policy. You don't have to negotiate the damage with the other party yourself.
Sort out your own car's repairs
Type 3 doesn't pay for your car. If the other party is at fault, claim from their insurer with the officer's documents. If you're at fault, your car's repairs are your own cost.

How to compare Type 3 plans
Type 3 plans share a name but not their limits or extra cover. Check these 7 things before you choose.
Third-party property limit
This is the heart of Type 3: the limit the insurer pays for the other party's car and property. If you drive in a city with many expensive cars, a higher limit matters.
Third-party injury and death limits
Check the limits per person and per accident. This pays above the พ.ร.บ. when someone is hurt or killed, and medical bills and compensation can be higher than you expect.
Medical expenses for people in your car
Some Type 3 plans pay medical expenses for driver and passengers and some don't. If you often carry passengers, this cover helps.
Personal accident
Check whether the plan pays compensation for death or disability from an accident, and how much per person.
Driver bail bond
After an accident where someone is hurt, the driver may be held. A plan with driver bail means you don't have to find the security yourself.
Driver and use conditions
Some plans name the drivers or limit how the car is used, such as personal use only. Match them to how you really use the car, because using it outside the conditions can stop a claim.
Payment options
Many insurers offer instalments, without a card by Auto Debit or a monthly QR, or with a participating credit card. The number of instalments and the minimum depend on the insurer and payment method. Some insurers only take full payment.
How much does Type 3 cost?
Type 3 usually has the lowest premium of any voluntary car insurance, because it never pays for your car, but there's no standard price. Each insurer prices from the type and size of the car, how it's used, the third-party limits, extra cover in the plan, and driver conditions. The same car can get different premiums from different insurers. The most accurate way to know is to enter your car details in the form above and see Type 3 quotes from the insurers that quote your car. To compare with Type 3+ or Type 2, switch the type on the results page. It's free, and you don't have to buy straight away.
