What is Type 2 car insurance?

Type 2 is voluntary car insurance that protects your own car against two big risks: theft and fire. If the car is stolen and not found, the insurer pays up to the sum insured. If the car is damaged by fire, the insurer pays for the damage under the policy terms. Type 2 also covers your liability for third parties' lives, bodies and property when you are at fault. Type 2 doesn't pay to repair your car after a collision, whether or not another vehicle is involved. That is the main difference from Type 2+, which adds repairs after a crash with another vehicle whose driver can be identified. Because of that, Type 2 usually costs less than Type 2+ and Type 1. Type 2 suits people who worry more about losing the car to theft or fire than about collision repairs, and who are ready to pay for their own repairs after a crash. As with every type, your car still needs its own พ.ร.บ. (compulsory motor insurance).

What Type 2 car insurance covers

Type 2 focuses on losing the car, rather than on everyday bumps and scrapes.

  • Theft or loss of your car, paid up to the sum insured
  • Fire damage to your car
  • Liability for third parties' property, such as the other car, a fence or a lamp post, when you are at fault
  • Liability for third parties' lives and bodies, above what the พ.ร.บ. pays
  • Medical expenses for driver and passengers, which many plans include
  • Driver bail bond after an accident, which many plans include

Limits, deductibles and conditions follow each insurer's policy. Extra cover such as medical expenses, personal accident, driver bail and flood depends on the plan, so check your quote shows them.

What Type 2 doesn't cover

A lower premium comes with narrower cover. Know these limits before you choose Type 2.

  • Repairs to your car after a collision with another vehicle, even when the other driver is identified
  • Repairs to your car after a crash with no other party, such as hitting a pole or a wall
  • Damage from hitting something that isn't a vehicle, such as a tree, a kerb or an animal
  • Wear and tear, and breakdowns not caused by an insured event
  • Flood and natural disasters, unless your plan lists that cover
  • Personal belongings left in the car

If you also want your car repaired after a crash with another vehicle, compare Type 2+. Other exclusions, such as driving over the legal alcohol limit or using the car differently from the policy, follow each insurer's policy.

How Type 2 differs from Type 2+ and Type 1

All three cover theft and fire. Type 2 leaves out repairs after any collision, so it has the lowest premium of the three.

Who Type 2 is for

  • People who worry more about theft and fire than about collision repairs
  • Cars used now and then but parked outside or in public car parks
  • Careful drivers who are ready to pay for their own repairs after a crash
  • Owners of models that are often targeted by thieves
  • Anyone who wants theft and fire cover for less than Type 2+

Type 2 makes sense when the biggest loss you can't absorb is losing the whole car, while smaller collision repairs are something you can pay for yourself. Ask yourself: after a minor crash, would you rather claim or pay the garage directly? If you would usually pay yourself, Type 2 can be a good fit. If you want the insurer to pay for repairs after a crash with another vehicle too, compare Type 2+, which adds that cover. The simplest way to decide is to compare quotes for Type 2, Type 2+ and Type 1 on your car and see how much more you pay for how much more cover.

Type 2: garage or dealer repair?

Type 2 only pays for repairs after an insured event, such as fire, or damage found when a stolen car is recovered, subject to the policy. Where the car is repaired then depends on the plan's repair option.

Tip: Type 2 never pays for collision repairs, whichever repair option you choose. Look at garage repair plans first if the car is older, and check the policy for how fire and theft damage is repaired.

How to claim on Type 2, step by step

On Type 2, claims for your own car are about theft and fire. If you cause an accident, the insurer handles the other party's claim.

  1. Make everyone safe first

If there is a fire, get everyone away from the car and call 199. If anyone is hurt in an accident, call 1669 before anything else.

  2. Report theft or fire to the police

If the car is stolen or burned, file a police report as soon as you can and keep the report. Insurers need it for theft and fire claims.

  3. Call your insurer

Call the claims hotline on your policy and give your policy number, plate number, location and what happened. For an accident you caused, don't pay the other party yourself before you speak to the claims officer.

  4. Prepare the documents

Insurers usually ask for the police report, the car registration book, your ID and driving licence, and the keys for a theft claim. Ask your insurer for the full list.

  5. Wait for the claims officer

The claims officer checks what happened and the documents, then tells you the next step. Theft claims usually have a waiting period while the police search for the car.

  6. Receive payment or repair

For a stolen car that isn't found, the insurer pays up to the sum insured under the policy. For fire damage, the car is repaired or paid for under the policy terms.

How to compare Type 2 plans

Type 2 plans share a name but not the details. Check these 7 things before you choose.

  • Sum insured

On Type 2, the sum insured is what the insurer pays if the car is stolen and not found, or written off by fire. Check it is close to what your car is really worth today.

  • Deductible

Plans with a deductible usually cost less, but you pay that amount yourself when you claim under its conditions. On Gengmak's results page you can filter plans with or without a deductible.

  • Third-party limits

Type 2 covers the other party when you cause an accident. Check the limits for injury per person and per accident, and for third-party property. Higher limits matter when you hit an expensive car.

  • Theft conditions

Read how the plan treats theft: what documents it needs, how long the waiting period is, and whether it covers parts stolen from the car or only the whole car.

  • Flood and extra cover

Some Type 2 plans cover flood and some don't. If you live in a flood-prone area, choose a plan that lists it clearly, and check medical, personal accident and driver bail cover too.

  • Compare with Type 2+

Type 2+ adds repairs after a crash with another vehicle. Look at both quotes for your car; sometimes the gap is small enough that Type 2+ is the better deal.

  • Payment options

Many insurers offer instalments, without a card by Auto Debit or a monthly QR, or with a participating credit card. The number of instalments and the minimum depend on the insurer and payment method. Some insurers only take full payment.

How much does Type 2 cost?

Type 2 usually costs less than Type 2+ and Type 1 for the same car, but there's no standard price. Each insurer prices from the make, model, year and variant, the sum insured, the deductible, extra cover in the plan, where the car is used, and claim history. Models that thieves often target can cost more to insure against theft. The same car can get different premiums from different insurers. To compare with Type 2+ or Type 1, switch the type on the results page. It's free, and you don't have to buy straight away.
